1) "What to do if September 11th Happens to You."
Recently I watched the movie titled 'Flight 93' that was about United Flight 93
on September 11, 2001, and afterward I heard people saying that September 11
would never happen again, because 'everyone' would get up and stop the hijackers.
I have a problem with the 'everyone' else will save me concept.
If I assume that others will act to save me, I'm in for a big disappointment;
especially if everyone on the plane carries this same assumption.
If we are on an airplane and terrorists take over, even now after September 11th
there is no guarantee that passengers would overwhelm the terrorists. If we’re
unprepared we must hope that there are some brave individuals like the ones on
board United 93.
Being unprepared leaves us dependent on other people to protect us, because we
haven’t taken the time to prepare. Maybe we took a class once and it was just
to complex. Or maybe it just took too long to learn anything valuable.
Don’t feel alone. These are two of the most common reasons why people abandon
self defense classes. We figure there’s nothing we can do to defend against a
weapon so why bother learning at all.
If you are one of these people there is still hope for you.
Here are some tips you can do to stop a terrorist. Afterall, we know that their
goal is to kill us and many others by flying into a building so there's nothing
to lose.
1) Choose your Weapon:
Look around for a weapon; you can use a backpack, a purse, a magazine, a book,
a pen, your keys, your drink or even your cell phone, iPod, or other small items
as a weapon. Without winding up, you would quickly apply the item into the
attacker’s face once or twice. The other person would do the same, and as the
attacker starts to cover up, shout out to others ‘COME ON LET’S GET HIM!’
Quickly get something in your hands that you can use as a weapon; to hold down
at your side. Then as you get close to the terrorist, bring your hand up at the
last second; quickly slamming the object into his face. Immediately after that
stomp your foot on their shin, and then slam your forearm into his face, which
will be coming downward.
Its at this point you'll want to be agressively attacking his face while you
command more and more people to join in.
2) Get an Attitude:
Think about the hijacker this thought, 'you're dead!' As you smile, imagining
that this person is going to harm the person you care about most in the whole
world if you don't stop him or her.
Command several people to subdue him while you command someone else to collect
two or three belts to tie him up. You could even use a few pairs of shoe laces.
One of the main concerns you’ll have as you overwhelm one of the attackers will
be to keep an eye on the other attackers, even calling out to other people to
‘GET HIM TOO!’
They are going to kill us anyway, so I'm going to take action to stop them.
3) Act Immediately:
If a terrorist is going to take control of an airplane, bus, train, office, etc.
the first 1-2 minutes are crucial. If he doesn’t establish control through fear
and violence he risks being retaliated against, being overwhelmed by those he is
trying to hold hostage.
Normally there will be at least 2 or 3 hijackers, and sometimes many more.
You should look around quickly as soon as the attack begins to try to see how
many there are and what type of weapons they have. Then recruit 1 or 2 others to
help. Preferably someone you know or have been talking to while waiting to board.
Another concern is that if he has a gun or knife, point it away from other people.
It’s okay if he’s still holding it while you’re bashing him into the ground along
with the help of others. It won’t take long for him to drop it. It’s at this point
you’ll want to grab it so he can’t grab it again.
Remember that the initial takeover phase of 1 minute or less is the best time to
stop them. They'll be surprised.
Sometimes the terrorist can gain control in 30-40 seconds, so whatever you do, be
sure to do it quickly and command others to help you, looking directly at them.
You could say ‘let’s get him,’ with intensity and fire in your eyes.
4) Don't Stop:
Keep attacking until all the hijackers are defeated.
Be sure that all of them have been detained and are tied up.
Be watchful because one or more of the hijackers might act like he or she is a
passenger staying alert and ready to try to stop anyone who resists their plan.
2) "ATM Safety Tips"
ATM's are an easy target for criminals to grab someone's cash, especially after dark or at secluded locations.
If possible try to get cash back while shopping at supermarkets or warehouse stores where they normally let you have as much as $100 cash back. By the way, fast food places, movie theatres and gas stations take ATM cards so many times cash isn't required.
However if you find yourself needing to get cash at an ATM, here are a few tips to help you be safer and more secure.
1) Stay Alert
- Keep your head up to see all around, casually monitoring all who approach, especially from behind.
- Use the reflective surface/mirror on the ATM to see behind you more easily.
- If you get suspicious quickly cancel the transaction (often the read button) and go inside the bank or to a store to get cash back, or to an ATM inside a store.
2) Safe Counting
- When your money comes out of the ATM, wait until your back in your vehicle with the doors locked or some other place that is safe where strangers won't see you counting. At the ATM machine you wouldn't be able to stay alert, and the machine wouldn't be able to help you if you were missing some money.
3) Your Life is Worth More
-
If someone demands your ATM card, wallet, etc. toss it past them so they'll have to turn around to get it while you run away to call the police.
-
Your life is worth much more than these replaceable items.
